Parts of the New River Trail are closed due to a major renovation project that necessitated the closing of several bridges along the trail. The project will impact the following sections of the trail:
Ivanhoe Bridge: The trail is closed on the bridge, and traffic will be detoured around the bridge through the upper and lower parking areas. This closure will likely be in place through July.
Sparks Bridge: The trail will be closed from the Ivanhoe access to just past Sparks Bridge, and trail traffic will be detoured along a short stretch of residential gravel road. This closure is expected to end by Friday, June 21.
US 52 Bridge: The trail will be closed from the Shot Tower access to the horse complex parking area starting July 8. This closure will likely be in place through August.
Appalachian Power Company is making repairs to the Buck Dam spillway, which will temporarily impact New River users. Starting July 7, Appalachian Power Company will lower the Buck Dam reservoir by roughly 8 feet and close the Buck Dam boat ramp.
The repairs are expected to take one to two weeks; however, water conditions may alter this schedule. During this time, the last take-out point for boaters is at the Byllesby reservoir and the next downstream put-in point is at Ivanhoe. To learn more, click here.
