A new and exciting birding trail is in the works! Located on a piece of land near the Ivanhoe River Trestle, the New River Trail will be enhancing a designated area for the conservation and protection of various species of birds endogenous to Southwest Virginia. The area will include a trail and benches for observation. Soft opening planned Spring of 2024!

Let’s show off how amazing our parks can be for wildlife this spring! This is a seven-day 'bioblitz' nature hunt to assist in recording and protecting wildlife in our parks. Take part in this friendly and fun competition to see who can gather the most observations of nature and find the most species.
Visit your favorite Southwest Virginia State Park during Earth Week (April 21-27) and use nature apps iNaturalist, Seek, or Merlin to document plants and animals. The park with the most observations will take home the Nature Challenge title, although citizen science is the real winner here!
Participating Parks:

Join us for our annual Earth Day Bird Count on the newly developed Ivanhoe Birding Trail. Bird surveys offer a way to learn about population trends; especially our migratory birds that travel thousands of miles each spring. We welcome birders of all skill levels. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, wear closed-toe shoes, and carry some food and water.
Participants will meet at the Ivanhoe Access parking lot at 7:30 a.m. Please DO NOT park at the horse trailer parking area under the trestle. A Virginia State Park van will be available to shuttle participants from the parking area to the birding trail from 7:30-7:45 a.m. If you miss the 7:45 a.m. shuttle, the birding trail is a 1.2-mile walk (24 minutes) from the Ivanhoe Access Parking Area to the birding trailhead. You can meet-up with the group there.
Why are we birding so early? Have you ever heard the saying "the early bird gets the worm?" Many birds are most active in the early morning, taking advantage of the abundance of insects at that hour. Expect to hike about 1.5-2 miles on the birding trail. There is a picnic shelter, so feel free to pack a lunch. We look forward to seeing you out there!
